Featuring Kimberly Fredenburgh on viola, the New Mexico Philharmonic is joined by maestro Victor Yampolsky in performances of Beethoven's Fidelio Overture, Bártok's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, and Brahms' Symphony No. 2. Victor Yampolsky’s career includes conducting throughout Europe and extensive engagements with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Yampolsky is Professor in Music Performance at the Northwestern University School of Music and Music Director Emeritus of the Omaha Symphony. Born in the Soviet Union in 1942, Yampolsky, the son of the great pianist Vladimir Yampolsky, studied violin with the legendary David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory. Pre-concert lecture at 5:00 p.m.

The Cathedral Choir, Choristers and acclaimed British baritone soloist, Edmund Connolly are accompanied by organ and orchestra, under the direction of Maxine Thévenot. Then hear the American Première of Philip Moore’s Concerto for Organ and Strings, played by Director of Cathedral Music, Maxine Thévenot, under the direction of the composer.

A winter “pops” concert with light classical music, patriotic tunes, and marches, including works by Morton Gould, Bela Bartok, James Curnow, and more. As a special treat, the Rio Rancho New Horizons Band (consisting of senior citizen musicians) will join the Rio Rancho Symphonic Band for a special performance of Brian Balmages’ “Through Courageous Eyes.” The Rio Rancho Symphonic Band is a concert band in its 7th year, under the direction of John C. Emory, with talented volunteer musicians from the greater Albuquerque area. Come and warm up with some great and lively music.

Between them, Cosy Sheridan and TR Ritchie have won most of the major songwriting contests in the country, among them the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Sisters Folk Festival, the Napa Valley Folk Festival, and the Silverton Folk Festival. Frequently traveling together but also performing as solo artists they have toured for the past 20 years, singing their songs in coffeehouses and concert halls, at festivals and in living rooms across the country. Sheridan has been called "one of the era's finest and most thoughtful singer-songwriters," while Ritchie was dubbed a "classic folk troubadour" by Performing Songwriter magazine.

Outpost's Spring 2012 season opens with a tribute to the music of legendary guitarist, Charlie Christian who, though he died at the young age of 25 in 1939, had an enormous influence on jazz guitar. The house guitarist at New York’s Minton’s Playhouse and a member of the Benny Goodman Sextet, Christian led the transition from swing to bebop and pushed the electric guitar into the spotlight. The tribute ensemble is guitarist, Michael Anthony; renowned trumpeter, Bobby Shew; drummer, Cal Haines, and bassist, Micky Patten.
